What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a medically supervised program designed to improve cardiovascular health for patients who have experienced a cardiac event. Research shows that participation in CR lowers the risk of future cardiac events, improves eating habits, facilitates weight loss, and encourages a healthy lifestyle. Despite the clear benefits, CR remains underutilized in the state of Michigan.

MVC’s cardiac rehab value-based improvement initiative endeavors to increase cardiac rehabilitation utilization across the state by supplying Michigan providers with tools to improve, peer learning opportunities, utilization data, and pay-for-performance incentives.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a Class IA indication, meaning there is high-quality evidence that it is beneficial.
Cardiac rehab programs typically consist of 24-36 1-hour sessions at a rehab facility that are customized to meet patient's needs.
Nevertheless, cardiac rehabilitation is widely underused, with utilization rates of only 20-30% nationally.

Tailoring MVC’s Cardiac Rehab Registry Reports Using Filters

MVC’s interactive, multi-payer cardiac rehab registry reports have replaced the static push reports previously shared with members on cardiac rehab utilization. Moving this reporting to the registry allows users to view MVC’s claims-based data on cardiac rehab utilization on demand in a variety of ways using a variety of filtering options.

Conditions

The following conditions can be applied as filters in the registry: AMI, PCI, SAVR, TAVR, CABG, CHF

Episode Length

In the registry, episode lengths include 30 days, 60 days, and 365 days.

Episode Start Dates

In the registry, users can select exact date ranges to analyze.

Payers

The following payers can be applied as filters in the registry: BCBSM Commercial, BCBSM MA, BCN Commercial, BCN MA, Medicaid, and Medicare

Patient Characteristics

Using the filters available on the registry, users can observe a range of patient characteristics including age, gender, and comorbidities.

Index Place of Service
